I decided to do the CogAT for our end of year testing (required in our state for homeschoolers). DS is in 2nd grade, so I ordered the grade 2 test. It just occurred to me that I could have ordered a higher level. We used the CAT the last 2 years, and I did order a higher level with that. It's not too late to send the 2nd grade one back and get a higher level, but it will be a pain (plus cost more $$). Ugh. Would it be okay to use the 2nd grade test? Or will the results be useless?

It depends on what you want from the test. If the only thing you want is a paper for your school district then 2nd grade testing is just fine. If you want more information then out of level testing may be more useful. We took the easy way out. DS6 took the 1st grade CAT.

We took the easy way out, too, but I'm bound and determined to do an above-level test next year. No wimping out! wink

They will accept the CoGat for end of the year testing? Our state does not. That's a cognitive abilities test, and not an achievement test. OR does CoGAT also do an achievement test?

They will pretty much take any test. I also have his SCAT if they won't take the CogAT.

Does anyone have further details on the CoGat. Pretty much the only info. I could get from the gifted assessor in our district was that the school counsellor would administer it in May - at her own pace etc. I havne't had time to research it yet. Do they give it to everyone at the end of each year, even in K?

The rest of you sound like you just have to do some kind of test to pass your State's requirement for home school? So there is no specific test required?

New Mexico has no year end requirements at all.

You should be getting an administrator guide with the CoGAT assessment. Be sure to follow the directions, especially on time and answering questions, as stated in the guide. If I remember correctly, it's very rare to complete all the questions in the given time.

The district my son is in, they give the CoGAT in certain grade levels. I think it may be K, 3rd, and 5th for elementary grade levels.

I think you can even request some district you live in the administer the test for your child..... which usually takes place in the summer time.

I'm not sure that's true, our tester for ds commented that most kids have time to hit all the questions. Ds8 didn't attempt a large number and that sounded unusual...
