If you are near University of Washington your child can perhaps qualify for a study there this summer which includes eight weeks of Lindamood Bell instruction for free. They reimburse participants so I think the kids end up making about $350 for doing it.

EmmaL, our school district has a summer program for struggling readers which includes their school-district-specific dyslexic-specific remedial tutoring. Is it IEP eligibility you're hoping for in May, or does your ds already have an IEP and you're waiting on a meeting and decision specifically about summer?

My suggestion going into your meeting is to be sure you know as much as you can about what your school district typically offers. Don't assume it's nothing. I don't know what specific resources you have in the area you're in, but examples of the places a parent could find that out here: your pediatrician or neuropsych, a local advocate (our area has a parents' advocate group which doesn't charge for questions etc - we found them on wrightslaw's website), school district contacts, the school district's resource library for special needs. If you can find other parents who've been through the process before and ask what their experience is it can be really helpful.

In general, I doubt the school district will pay for a private LMB program during summer months, but chances are good they may be able to offer extended school year or summer school.

    Best wishes,

    Emma,

I think the relevant part of the sped regs for ESY in your case is probably this:

"Students must be considered for twelve-month special services and/or programs to prevent substantial regression if they are students receiving other special education services who, because of their disabilities, exhibit the need for twelve-month special service and/or program provided in a structured learning environment of up to 12 months duration in order to prevent substantial regression.

Both quantitative and qualitative information should be reviewed by the CSE to substantiate the need for providing such services and programs. A student is eligible for a twelve-month service or program when the period of review or reteaching required to recoup the skill or knowledge level attained by the end of the prior school year is beyond the time ordinarily reserved for that purpose at the beginning of the school year. The typical period of review or reteaching ranges between 20 and 40 school days. As a guideline for determining eligibility for an extended school year program, a review period of eight weeks or more would indicate that substantial regression has occurred."

If I recall correctly, you may already have data that supports the regression/review period tests.

Using your existing eval reports, you may also be able to get two years of free Orton-Gillingham through the Scottish Rite Masons. Check here for locations and contact info:
