DD4 is learning basic addition using the Kumon 1st Grade addition book. I wanted to try some other workbooks too for supplemental, and am looking at Singapore Math.

If y'all use Singapore Math, do you use the Math in Focus books? If so, which book would be the right level for her (just addition and subtraction/she hasn't grasped skip-counting, etc). Would Level A Year 1 be the one I need?

I know the Kitchen Table math series and Life of Fred are highly recommended, and I'm looking into them, but she's a wee bit workbook obsessed right now so I'm trying to stick with what motivates her.

I had some questions on Singapore Math a few weeks ago and received a link from Portia. This is a website you can purchase the books. They also have assessment worksheet so you know which book you should start for your kiddo. I decided to use Beast Academy for my DS7 at the end, but did use the assessment sheets to find out where my DS would start with Singapore Math.

I think Kindergarten B will be a good place to start.

I would agree that Kindergarten B or 1A would be a good place to start. I also have a workbook lover, and Singapore Math has been a good fit. I've found the best prices at this supplier:

    http://www.christianbook.com/page/homeschool/math/singapore-math/singapore-primary-math-us?navcat=Homeschool|Math|Singapore-Math

Note they have three different editions, plus Math In Focus (which is a different publisher, so on a different page). I've used the standards edition, while the US edition has long been a favorite in the homeschool community.

Our school system uses Math in Focus and I have particularly impressed with the enrichment packets. You might also want to see what your school district uses so your child does not have to do the same work twice. When DD was that age, I just used these super skinny and inexpensive workbooks called Flash skills. She could get through one in about a week and when she was 4 or 5, she covered the entire first grade curriculum in about a month (at only 10 min a night).

We just got our Math in Focus and she's starting at 1A. It's been perfect for her. Since she was really at the beginning in terms of addition this is helping her establish some more numeracy skills that will help her later. I'm really impressed by the way they word the problems. And it still cracks me up how excited she is to work her way through the book. It's much less repetition than Kumon, yet works on reinforcing concepts using multiple methods.

Her school uses Eureka Math. I think it's also based on Singapore Math, and I don't think it uses the "spiral" system (ugh), so hopefully we're good there. I am worried she'll be too advanced but I won't worry about that until after kindergarten -- we just had her preK parent-teacher conference and her teacher is recommending her for a similar classroom to this year for K that is more project-based. So whatever skills she has/doesn't have hopefully won't be an issue, as it wasn't this year either.

Eureka is free to download, btw, if that interests you.

Thanks! I just checked it out and it is very similar. I'm going to have to deal with this by first grade, aren't I. (She's effectively doing the same things in the eureka first grade book now. If it were only one year apart, I think it'd be good review. If she ends up two years ahead....)

I don't know how comprehensive the free resources are; I just glanced at them to gauge how similar they are to Math in Focus.
