Today I walked into DS7s school for the usual mid day pickup. He attends public school in the morning and homeschools in the afternoon. Although the school has agreed to this, they have given me grief all along. I have never found one supporter on staff - well at least a vocal one.

    Until today.

Today when I entered school, a teacher who I don't know, approached me. Her finger was out, pointing at me and she said, "Are you homeschooling your son?! Is that why you are pulling him out everyday after lunch?"

I straightened my back as I usually do and got ready for the usual non helpful comments and questions. I told her, "Yes, that's what I am doing."

She said, "Great! I really want to talk to you about it. My son is gifted. His school really can't and won't meet his needs. But I'd love for him to attend school part time. Can we set up a time to talk about this?!"

After I picked myself off the floor, I told her that I would LOVE to chat with her sometime. After hearing about the shananigans we've been through to get my son ANY kind of accommodation, she got really upset. She said that she would instantly take it up with the administration and board at the school as she sees our experiences as a series of ethical violations. (She is the "ethical officer" or has some such title.) I am certain that nothing will come of this. But, she's got tenure and has this ethical role, so at least I know she will have the opportunity to speak and she won't be fired.

    +1 for this teacher!

Wow! Well, you never know! Sometimes it takes that one person on the "inside." It's like...you can push all you want on the door from the outside and nothing will happen, but if someone inside has the key...
