..my DS5 has been having a rough time at school so we have been doing tons of fun learning things at home...the other day on Yahoo News it stated that Scientists have now decided to call bodies that are orbiting beyond Neptune "plutoids" (Eris and Pluto are now plutoids)...my son loves any and all things to do with space so I passed this information on to him....he quickly came back with, "well mommy, what about Ceres - it's a dwarf planet too but it's not past Neptune...I guess we can call Ceres a "marsoid" because it is past Mars. He just made me giggle :-)

"Kids say the darndest things", Tammy Wynette??
I love marsoid - makes me think of a Mars candy bar fanatic.

Very cute story. But squirt, and here I am showing which birthday is coming up, but isn't the reference Art Linkletter?
I am too old if I know that...

Really cute I had to giggle over the weekend when my husband was helping with the general house overhaul. He was trying to decide whose bookshelf certain books belonged on. It is getting hard to tell my books from my son's (age 9). He has started picking out certain pre-approved sci-fi books from the adult section of the library and bookstores Of course DH has trouble telling my socks from DS's too

My son walked in and saw me looking at the "Gifted Exchange" blog and said something like "I knew it--you're tired of me and you're ready to trade me in."

I was organizing the books in the house this weekend (and trying desperately to find a single Sherlock Holmes anywhere... I know I used to have it!) and after I was done rearranging everything DH said "Now where do we keep the books that used to be mine but are now DS's?"

As long as the marsoid is not floating in the pool, we'll all be happy!

Was that a reference to Caddyshack? Egads, I'm reliving the 70's...

We recently saw a young man wearing a sort of animal costume and dancing strangely... My eight year old quipped, "He might say to his friend, "Do you think I should take it to Hollywood?" and his friend replies, "I think you should take it to a psychiatrist!"

Hi Lorel! (and Dottie, and I'm sure perhaps some others!)
That is hilarious. Yes, the reference is to "Caddyshack"...DH's favorite movie, and I have seen it waaay too many times. But your son and his friend's comments are even funnier.
I'm jumping right in here, without really an intro, but dd12's comment yesterday totally cracked me up. My mother recently passed away after a long illness (sad, but she is now where she wanted to be) and we were discussing the afterlife. DD said, "well, they've GOTTA have a hardware store in Heaven." For some reason that just totally cracked me up, as my dad spent a good portion of his off-work hours puttering in the garage or at the hardware store.

Emm- It was actually my 8 yo daughter who said that. I love the comment on the hardware store on Heaven. My condolences on the loss of your mother. Sometimes a bit of laughter can ease the pain. My dad passed away at an airport in China, after suffering a blood clot on the long flight. He was quickly carried back into Hong Kong and it took us a week to get his body back to the states for burial, as there was red tape due to his being a German national. (They would have released his body to Germany, but his wife and children were in the states, where he had lived most of his adult life.) Anyway, he had to be embalmed in Hong Kong, and when we finally got him back and viewed his body at the funeral home, he had a definite Asian cast to his features! My sisters and I laughed until we cried. Apparently, that undertaker didn't work on a lot of Caucasians.

OH Lorel I'm so sorry for your loss and the way it happened.
Emm - I'm so sorry for your loss as well. The comment about the hardware store was very funny!

Another one:
My mom, sister, nephew, Pud and I were traveling last week. We stopped at a DQ for a potty break and drinks. As we were getting ready to leave, I decided to go back in and use the restroom again. Pud says "Don't talk to anybody while you are in there". My mom praised him for being concerned about my safety (don't talk to strangers). According to her, he rolled his eyes and said "THAT'S not it - if she talks to anyone we'll never get out of here"! Guess I'm getting to be a windbag!
Happy Tuesday!

My son just loves to argue with me and his adult sister. Today, I didn't feel like getting into a debate so I just said, "You know, silence is golden," to which he replied "but a ruckus is platinum."

Today as we were leaving the local ice-cream shop at the end of a long week, my DW accidentally tossed her car keys into the trash. As she fished them out, DS6 asked "Why did you throw your keys into the trash, mom?" DW replied "I guess I just have a small brain." DS: "You need to get an upper-case brain."

So funny!
Unfortunately both my daughters have realized that adults are somewhat easy to deceive. More unfortunately, my oldest has mistakenly come to think that this also applies to me!
So here's my most used phrase lately(feel free to pilfer):
You can fool some of the people all of the time. You can fool all of the people some of the time.
BUT YOU CAN NEVER FOOL YOUR MOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was reminded of plutoids today, and since I've only come to this forum recently, I figured I would look up the term to see if it was discussed here when Pluto was first demoted. (Of course it was discussed here!)
Part of what I was reminded of was how sad my son was when he heard this news. It was totally unexpected that he would be so bothered by this - I thought he might be excited to discuss it with his cousins and others, but he just would not talk about it - refused to speak about it for several days. It just seemed soooooo unfair to him!
Sorry to dig up an ancient thread...but this one made me giggle in retrospect.

BUT YOU CAN NEVER FOOL YOUR MOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! That's a good one! There was a time when we were talking about careers at the dinner table. DS said I have the best "job" because I get to boss people around.

Chris - my little guy responded much in the same way and argues with anyone that says Pluto isn't a planet :-) we actually found a really neat book called 11 Planets: A New View of the Solar System by National Geographic. He was SO excited that someone else agreed with him. He didn't think it was fair at all that Pluto was demoted.
