I had DS12 evaluated for dyslexia this summer and his scores did not indicate dyslexia. However, in following the current stealth dyslexia thread, I went through the Eides' slide show and combed back through DS' testing in light of it.

Can anyone tell me about the Elision and Blending Words subtests in the Phonological Awareness section of the CTOPP? Is this section a test using nonsense words or actual words?

Thanks for any help on this!

Here is a link to the Eides' PowerPoint:

This made me wonder if any of DS' dyslexia testing included decoding nonsense/pseudowords. Decoding nonsense words seems to be a rule in/rule out for stealth dyslexia according to the Eides. I am not sure if the CTOPP tests nonsense words, real words or a combination of the two. Does anyone know?

This is a description of part of the CTOPP that we have from one of my children's evals by a reading specialist:

Phonological awareness – (assessment tasks include elision, or saying and changing words by dropping sounds, and blending sounds to create new words)
Children with well-developed phonological awareness learn to read more easily than do children with poorly developed phonological awareness. Scores below 90 indicate a deficit.

Elision example: Say tan. Now say tan without saying /t/

Blending Words example: Put the parts together: s-o = so

The test that was included in CTOPP that looked closest to nonsense words was "Nonword Repetion"- example: Repeat each word exactly as you hear it: wudoip

Our dd's test included DIBELS which has a section on nonsense words - she also had several other reading tests, if you want I can look through her report at the others. The person who did her eval did a really good job of explaining the tests and testing objectives as they related to reading skills.

What other tests did your ds have?
