Someone was asking about reading objectives for her child who was reading above level and she was going to be teaching her reading (I believe in a partial homeschooling situation). I can't find that thread anywhere. If someone knows where that post is I will move this over there.

I just got the list of 3rd grade expectations for reading for my son and I hope this helps:

    • context clues
    • Base words/prefix/suffix
    • synonyms/antonyms
    • multiple meaning words
    • author's purpose/perspective
    • main idea/supporting details
    • sequence
    • predict
    • cause/effect
    • compare/contrast 2 texts
    • theme
    • topic
    • figurative language
    • text features
    • graphic source

I think it means can interpret graphs, pictures, charts included in text. And the new buzz word infograph In a digital presentation too.

I also found that one teacher's interpretation can differ from another teacher's. Even with the same guideline.

As long as they are reading is my feeling. I remember the old reading machines. You got a timed machine, reading line by line and seeing how fast you could read and then do a test after to see how much you got out of it. And the purpose of that was....
But that was in the days of Evelyn Wood.

    The mind boggles LOL

Definitely sounds like something that wouldn't go down well in the 'Bible Belt'!
