A story from ABC suggests wandering incidences among children on the autism spectrum are much higher than expected.

After being told this summer that my oldest has a lot of Aspergers traits, I've found more and more instances of what I thought were just quirks that have turned out to be signs I didn't recognize. Like his early descriptions of being able to smell notes and his incessant desire to wander off. We had to padlock the backyard, because he was a little escape artist, even as a toddler.

And, no, I'm not armchair diagnosing - just kind of glad to see a few puzzle pieces explained that we can share with his doctor.
