Sorry. I was on vacation out of the country with no internet for a couple weeks so a bit late in reading the replies.
The switch to school has worked out fairly well for both my boys. My middle ds is not academically gifted (or hides it well...LOL) and was a bit passive-aggressive at home about doing his schoolwork. Going to school was a great move for him...the peer pressure and having to be accountable to someone other than me was key for him. He is now a diligent student and works hard.
For my oldest, the extracurricular activities, mainly wrestling, are wonderful. The academics in his 8th grade year left a bit to be desired but now that he is in high school and has more choice in classes including AP classes and Honors classes, the academic challenge has improved. I still don't think he is functioning at the top of his ability but he enjoys school and all it entails. School would not have been a good option for him in his younger years because he was very outgoing and a bit of a handfull when bored. I am sure they would have wanted him on Ritalin or something because they would not have had the resources to teach him at a challenge level.
