My son attends a regular public school, not a school for the gifted. Our school has no gifted program until 4th grade. They do not test the children until 3rd grade, then they use CogAT (a group ability test) to identify gifted students. Our school also does not accept private test results, although some schools in other states do. In the U.S. there is a lot of variation when it comes to gifted programs. Some states have none at all. Rules for testing and identification vary from state to state. Parents here often have difficulty obtaining services for their gifted children. I wish I could tell you that the grass is greener here crazy

We paid for private intelligence testing (WPPSI-III) for our son which helped us advocate for acceleration. His acceleration is not considered part of the gifted program. That doesn't make much sense, but that's how they do things!
