Not every intellectually gifted kids want to get ahead on math or other academic subjects. They may show more of that when they are young when other kids are really not interested at all. Now that they are all in school, the novelty is off. I really don't think this means anything at all. It may come back when something caught his imagination.
I don't really think MG kids behave all that differently other than they just got things more quickly or may be more deeply at school. I also think they don't dazzle you all that often when they are older.
