It's hard to imagine the burden for an eight year old who has to use up all their clock cycles to make sure their joints are staying in place when they move from one place to another.

In my mind the approach would be to ask yourself how would you handle it if the complexity of a task exceeded your ability to remember all the steps. Personally, I'd find something easier to do... no that's not right... I'd have a list before I begin the task..

Maybe a set of laminated cards with a set of steps for common tasks might work (if tasks are chained he can take more than one card in sequence), not sure how that would work out socially. If carrying something around isn't a good option, another big way to store sequential steps is to memorize a song+tune involving the steps. The brain seems to be really good at managing a sequence that is musically tied (not mine, but that's a different story.)
