Have you ever looked at the "6+1 Writing Traits" book? Its a way to talk about writing and reading from the prespective of "how did the author get that effect." It's also a great read. I don't think you will be able to get the school involved, but I think it's worth looking at for the kind of informal afterschooling that occurs in the nooks and crannies of the day if you are ready for them.
