I didn't really know where to put this post so I hope it works here. My son and I have some 2nd grade FOSS science kits to go through this summer since he will be skipping 2nd and going into 3rd. The one part of the kit is on insects and after looking at the FOSS supplier for living specimens I've decided that it is just too costly and most are class sets. Are there any other homeschoolers on this board who use different suppliers that you can just get a few insects and not whole class sets? I'm going to try some bait shops for the worms...any other ideas would be great.

Sometimes you can find online coupons for homescience tools.

We currently have ladybug larvae, Painted lady caterpillars, Asian praying mantis egg case, and a mosquito larvae culture (didn't purchase that one) happily growing on the entertainment center!

For earthworms, go to bait shop but you can also buy kits for those as well.

Our local pet food store also has live insects.
(And having a fisherman for a dad, I remember it was fun to just put the hose out in the backyard for awhile and then go get the earthworms. I suppose it's not green now - maybe now we should "dump our rain barrels" instead.)

We've been happy with live insects purchased through Carolina Biological.

Thank you all for your input. st. pauli girl- I actually called a pet food supply store near me and they carry the live mealworms and waxworms I'm looking for at a really cheap price. Cool.
