I was reading a thread about homeschooling here and saw a lot of proponents of MCT's Language Arts curriculum, and have a question for those of you familiar with it.

We're thinking of taking a look at MCT for afterschooling or using over the summer for DS8 and DS6, who have been asking for more LA challenge. The website says that the Teacher's Guides have the student book plus add'l info. Would you recommend getting the Teacher's Guide instead of the student book? ...or just the student book? ...or should I just spend the money and buy both?

Thanks for your help. The curriculum looks great!

You just need the teachers guide. It has the student text plus comments for the teacher. I use it for afterschooling too.

Thanks, Elisa. I ordered a couple of the Teacher's Guides.

Does it make me a geek to be excited to receive text books? *lol*

The only student book you need is the practice book. smile Unless you want to copy the sentence elsewhere, like a whiteboard.

Yes, you're a total geek.

Another vote for just the teacher guide. You can buy a minimal homeschool package w/just the teacher guides and then a student version of practice island. I've seen no need at all to have both versions laying around the house.

Oh and for the record, I'm a total MCT geek. I never thought I would be excited about any packaged curriculum.

At what age do you start MCT? My child is 6 and is an advanced reader but has small motor issues and does not like to write very much. For such a child, would MCT Island be too early?
We are doing First Language Lessons right now for afterschooling.
