I've been searching here and there for a good online tutorial for learning math operations on the abacus. DS's new interest. I know that you can do some pretty neat things with it. Anyone have a recommendation? Google is good, but I know sometimes there are hidden gems out there that Google seems to miss.

Are you talking a soroban or something like the Rightstart Abacus?

Totton and Bernazzani are the two I'm most familiar with.

Hmm I'll have to see if I can find my links. We have a saunpan (2 heaven-5earth beads), not a soroban (1 heaven-5eart beads).

There are patterns and what not when doing addition and subtraction that I think DS would totally eat up. Right now he's basically adding the number in his head and then (!) putting it on the abacus. Silly boy!

Have him practice adding 123456789 over and over again... it gives you a LOT of practice! And if you do it right, you get to 1111111101.

Abacus is really a very nice tool of a sort
It makes concentration and listening skills also get enhanaced
