How do we prepare our child to take the gifted program test. We want her to be in the gifted program. She studies very well and we think she should be placed there. We talked with the teacher and she was assessed for the gifted program. She did not recieve enough points on the Matrix Eligibility scale. We were told we could pay to have her tested with a private testing facility.
We would like to prepare her for this test. Is there a way to do this.
Is there someplace that we can get an example of the IQ test or how would we prepare her for that test.

From what I had read, there is really no way/reason to prep for an IQ test, since it does not measure knowledge. I was told to just make sure my DD got a good nights sleep and a normal breakfast. I just told her that she was going to go meet with someone who was going to identify how she learns. (we explained that we wanted to know how best she learns, so we can make parenting and educational decisions with that knowledge)

HTH :-)

Although it might be considered "unethical" to have any advance knowledge about an IQ test, I find that knowing the types and format of question really makes the difference in the score. So assuming she would be tested on WISC IV, I would just google this online and you would get all public info on it; you won't get the questions that are on the actual test, just sample questions.

I was reading this book and I do not believe that all gifted studies have all these traits.

Here is an article in reference to preparing for testing.

You really can't prepare them and really shouldn't if you mean practicing what you think the test will cover. The test is about finding their true IQ and though not perfect by any stretch, add on parents prepping their kids and the data becomes invalid.

The tester will know if your child has been prepped and the test will be invalid.

I would agree with other posters who said that the best preparation is a relaxed, fed, well-rested child. This will give you the best chance for an accurate score and the best possible academic placement for your child.

Good luck! I know this is a stressful process having been through it myself smile

I think she should be prepared in this way. Tell her they will ask her questions and she is not expected to know all the answers and some things might even seem silly. She should just do her best. I would be very relaxed about it and say she did a good job. Search hoagies for article on this.
