OMG! Are you serious??? Well, let us know when yours come, then I'll start really stalking my mailman.
Posted By: lily Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/10/08 10:52 PM
DD took it on the 26th. Nothing for us, either. To make matters worse, the mail came very, very late today! I think I checked it 3 times. I keep telling myself that the odds go up each day...
Posted By: Barbara Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/11/08 02:13 AM
DS9 took the SCAT today. I guess my question is: what happens after you get the results? (which we were told would take 3 weeks)

just what is the value of the SCAT?

just wondering.

Did your kiddos take it through CTY?
I am registering my 2nd grader today and wonder how long it will be before he can take the test?
Posted By: RJH Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/11/08 03:56 PM
Yes, what Dottie said. Once you get info from CTY you can schedule the test as soon as you want. I'm not sure what we will do with the results when we get them. It's too far to participate in summer camps (plus DS is only 7). And their online courses are so much money. crazy
Posted By: elh0706 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/11/08 04:12 PM
This will be the second year DS is taking the SCAT. I'm hoping to use the results to see how he is progressing. We are trying the EXPLORE this year as well. DS loves taking these tests.

Follow up to the SCAT discussion -

I have all the info for the SCAT including the code my question here is should I do it? My dd7 is not terribly advanced in Math and while she is a good reader I am having second thoughts about the whole thing and whether or not she is a good candidate. Does anyone have insight into participation in the program were she to get accepted? Will she be overwhelmed by the workload and level of the other kids? Theoretically we could participate in all that they have to offer if accepted. The day trips and overnight field trips described in the Discovery?(parent + kid) programs sound fabulous.
Posted By: az1 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/11/08 06:04 PM
Thanks.

My older child DD9 is taking the EXPLORE this year. It won't be given until then end of January.

no scores today
Posted By: RJH Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/16/08 02:42 PM
I was hoping that by taking the test earlier in the school year, we would avoid the last minute rush.....but I guess not. This coming Sat will be a full 3 weeks for us. I really hope they come this week.
Posted By: ienjoysoup Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/16/08 02:46 PM
still nothing here!

I am hoping tomorrow, it will officially be 3 weeks on Monday.
Posted By: chris1234 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/16/08 04:32 PM
The guy at our testing center said two weeks, so at least he has the impression things are still pretty fast. Nothing here yet, but it's only been a week.

Posted By: chris1234 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/16/08 07:07 PM
Ok, scratch all that! I realized after I wrote, I didn't really even check mail yesterday - ta da!
Well, the scores could have been better, but I am pretty pleased with results.
They are really in line with what ds did on testing last year with the k-bit, so no big surprises there:
He is in 3rd grade; his verbal was very good - 427, but still not qualifying for classes, so that was disappointing for him. It really sounded like when he left the testing place that he was 'stuck on the last question' on both parts of the test. I wondered at the time if that was really the last question or just where he got stuck. I spent some time explaining how really really good that 427 is but he is still a tiny bit unhappy about not getting to take the classes (unless he decides to try again, which I suggested he could if he wanted).
I also asked if it is really hard for him to skip or guess at questions and he said, definitely, he hates doing that - I guess I have a perfectionist on my hands despite my denials of it...

I hope taking it helped him in the following week when he had to run through the CoGAT at school; wish I knew when and if I would ever see those scores!

On the bright side for folks still waiting - perhaps it is a good sign of having qualified for courses! smile Good luck to all the kiddoes still waiting.

My main question now is whether the percentile rank amongst 5th graders can be translated into a percentile rank amongst 3rd graders, but I think I have read somewhere here that this would not be possible - let me know if anyone has any theories on it!

Posted By: chris1234 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/16/08 07:47 PM
Thanks Dottie, actually that makes me wonder if he really did get stuck, the percentile would be pretty low for his regular grade at that rate! At least in comparison to how he did on his k-bit last year, and if I am understanding you...

confused

Chris,

I expect he could still take language courses at EPGY. You might want to look into it if he's really that disappointed. They're different, though. Not writing so much as grammar. But there are also reading comprehension questions on a decent list of books in the separate (but included) RWL course.

Posted By: chris1234 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/16/08 08:56 PM
Thanks again Dottie, that's a lot of interesting information. You're right, I am trying not to read too much into it...your statement about fall v. spring makes me wonder more seriously about him having another go.
Thanks questions, I will take a gander at the EPGY stuff too!

Seriously, Soup, I would be getting pretty antsy by 3 weeks out too!! We live in VA, however so I bet that helped.
Dottie - I noticed that little test on the EPGY site too...veeewy intewesting!

yeah.... pretty darn tootin' nerve rackin'!
Posted By: ienjoysoup Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/17/08 04:06 PM
THEY CAME!

woo hoo!

he got 441 on verbal and 454 on math- sort of backward as to his strengths...

But I guess he will qualify to take some classes... but sure what though?

now I have to do the financial jig...lol

his raw score 40/50 verbal and 41/50 math
Posted By: RJH Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/17/08 04:25 PM
Awesome!! Great scores! Now I will really start stalking the mailman.
Posted By: ienjoysoup Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/17/08 05:01 PM
yeah, I just looked at the financial aid app though and you can only get financial aid for one 3 month class per fiscal year..... so I guess we'll havee to pick the class out and hope for the best,

we'll have to scrap up enough cash for the deposit to apply for financial aid... looks like $180 for language arts or $230 for math and science.

(sucks being poor)

DS's just came. Not as good as he or I thought they would be frown Verbal was 415, 20/50 and math was 436 31/50.

Congrats Soup! YOUR scores are great! whistleYour SON's scores are great! Will DYS give you $ for this? If your child is in DYS, they just might (I'm a newbie so I am not really sure). No more pestering the mail carrier!!!

really?

I just set up this thing and sent it to all of my facebook friends

he is not a DYS kid.... I think his IQ score is too low, although, i have a feeling the iq test is off..... I guess it's off to application land for me!

Still quite good for DS's age. You should read Dottie's post about Fall testing v. Spring testing... Your DS is very close on math...

Probably just not his day..... he can take it twice in one year!

have him try again!

Hey, if people can set up websites for folks to contribute to a couple's honeymoon...anything goes! Great Idea! Good luck! And Soup, at some point, I would suggest a retest for DS if you can find someone willing to administer the IQs for a reasonable price. I am sure you already looked into this and short of having to read all of your previous posts, you could try a local junior college or university to see if they can assist at a nominal cost. I would look at one with PhD programs (well, maybe not a junior college but if they had a qualified counselor) in Psychology/Testing. HTH and Good Luck! Time to ask for Xmas donations to the site rather than gifts from the relatives smile

we are going to try to request the district test him again when he is 8

RJH, the math DOES qualify, doesn't it? He's 2nd grade, right? He only needs 435 for the math.

Yes, he made it by 1 point. grin And yes, he's in 2nd grade. I guess he had me convinced it was "pretty easy" (his words). LOL! He did say the verbal part was harder, though. wink
Posted By: momx2 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/17/08 07:45 PM
Well, Congrats RJH's DS. I wasn't sure how old DS was or what grade. We are planning to take the SCAT. I need to call and schedule it.
BTW - Verbal analogies get tough quickly. Even on the pretest on the CTY site, I wasn't clear on 2 of questions - even with the answers. And, if you are an overthinker or an overanalyzer, analogies are not necessarily the best item to be tested on... Although I am unsure what could be substituted for them... Anyway, analogies will rear their ugly head for our kids for many years to come!!!

Thanks, I agree with the hard analogies. I had to look at 2 answers from the practice test, too. blush

After 22 days, we finally received our scores!

What I thought was interesting was that her raw score was higher on the verbal by 5, but she had almost identical scaled scores: 440 and 441. (She thought that she had done worse on the verbal than on the quantitative).

I also thought it was interesting that last years girls and boys had similar verbal scores, but the boys did better on the quantitative. I am spending too much time analyzing this data...

Newbie here. Could someone explain LOG with regard to SCAT scores? Are qualifying scores considered gifted? What would be considered highly gifted? Help!
Posted By: Dazed&Confuzed Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/18/08 08:28 PM
What are the "awards ceremonies?" In order to participate in those, you have to test by March 1, 2009. Any advantage to testing before then? I was thinking of perhaps Aprilish 2009.
Posted By: Dazed&Confuzed Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/18/08 08:53 PM
Nope, not looking for any summer programs (none nearby) nor summer courses - too expensive at this point. I"m just doing it for my own information.
Posted By: questions Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/18/08 11:48 PM
Couple of quick and hopefully helpful comments.

Your kids can still qualify and get their awards no matter when they test during the year. It's just that if you don't register by the cut-off date, you don't get to attend the ceremony. You can confirm this, but I believe that's what I read.

As for online course prices: note that CTY Grade 1-6 math is EPGY. Only difference is that it's CTY rather than EPGY tutors, and CTY gives written exams and/or quizzes rather than online. If you want to save money on these courses, go directly to EPGY, where you can get them month by month (rather than $640 for 3 months). Maybe they have better aid, too. Don't really know.

Also, as discussed previously, you can go to www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org and watch the listings for Destination Math II and up which correlate exactly to Elementary Problem Solving I and II, Pre-Algebra, etc. Only differences (other than 8,000% discount) appear to be that CTY offers unit quizzes, written homework (which is actually decent for DM III/CTY EPS II) and tutors. Also, CyberEd courses are the CTY basic science courses. CTY requires 5th grade math, but so far there doesn't appear to be any math in either CyberEd earth and space science or life science.

HTH those concerned about $$.

Posted By: incogneato Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/19/08 01:32 AM
Can you go month by month at EPGY? It looks like you pay by the quarter in the tuition section.
Posted By: questions Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/19/08 03:58 AM
I'm trying to remember. Maybe they let you renew month by month. I know I extended DS's LAW at EPGY and I could just pay by the month. CTY has a weird renewal policy. If you finish early, you can choose a new course and keep going and then extend at the end of the original period. But if you don't choose a new course by the end, you have to pay another new registration fee when you go to sign up for a new course. Same thing with SCAT. They send out materials saying test again, see how you're doing. But they require you to pay the $30 or $35 application fee again, in addition to the $50 fee for taking the test. I can understand paying for the test again, but why do you need to fill out the forms from scratch and pay again? Shouldn't everyone already be in the system? Is this a necessity for them or a money maker?
Posted By: chris1234 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/19/08 10:32 AM
From what I just read, you have to repay the $50 if you are retesting in the same year or award cycle...you don't have to repay the $30 bucks unless you are trying again the next year - for jhu-cty/scat. I guess if we do retest we will find out for sure...
Posted By: questions Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/19/08 12:46 PM
Yes. My objection is to paying a new application fee in addition to the testing fee every year, and paying a registration fee for each course you sign up for if you're out of time on your current course. Well, I'm hoping that that extra $ is used to benefit some of you who hesitate at the cost. If I look at it that way, I don't have a hard time with it.

DD11 is currently doing EPGY math - we started at Grade 5 and are about to start Algebra 1 - we have to pay quarterly, and they only allow you to start a new class on the first of the month. Last time I looked, it was significantly cheaper than CTY. Also, CTY uses EPGY's program up to a certain point (I think they diverge at Honors Pre-Algebra), so we figured, if it was the same program and cheaper, why not go with EPGY!! We aren't in the CTY Talent Search area anyway, so there was no incentive to take SCAT because DD isn't eligible for the awards ceremonies. EPGY allows qualification based on ERB testing DD did at school anyway, so less $$$ there too.

"ok I came up with a plan in my giant brain"......

I am going to do one class with cty and get the financial aid, then go to epgy, and get there financial aid for the math!

oh yeah, bargain shoppin' ............

fyi, I renewed DS's EPGY language arts month by month.
Posted By: Barbara Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/24/08 11:50 PM
well, we got DSjust9's SCAT results - he tested in the 2nd/3rd grade group and got a 461 verbal (missed 2 questions) and 477 quant (missed 1 question)

ok, now what???

yikes
Posted By: Barbara Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/25/08 12:30 AM
thanks, Dottie!

he feels really good about the results, although he did say the test wasn't at all challenging for him.

From what I understand the Explore has to be administered by a school system, right? If so, I don't think any around here use it, but I will keep looking.

We just might have to spring for a full on assessment...
Posted By: Barbara Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 11/25/08 01:32 AM
aw, Dottie, you remembered his being tested at 5! Thank you!

yeah I always thought that assessment was inaccurate, but what do I know??? I mean, she was a PROFESSIONAL! (sorry, that still rankles)
Posted By: momx2 Re: Waiting on DS SCAT scores...... - 12/12/08 09:45 PM
We tested on Saturday 12/6 and got our scores today, 12/12. So, it looks like CTY is back to their usual speediness and efficiency.
