I am hoping to get some ideas for good camps (1 week or 2 weeks ) maybe overnight, which focus on science, engineering (robotics or 'inventing') or even Math. Any ideas greatly appreciated (rising 5th grader).
    thanks~

Wish I had more specific ideas, but check with your State Gifted Association or John Hopkins CTY for more ideas.
DS13 enjoyed CTY overnight camp, but I don't think that is offered for rising 5th graders. I would try to met some parents at the CTY talent search activities if I were local to Baltimore.

    Good Luck!

Hi Chris- not sure if this is what you're looking for, (maybe more nature than hard science.)

    www.bayrestoration.org/education_SummerCamp.html

It's a nature day camp, in Grasonville, MD. Our kids loved it, but they were younger than yours when we attended. (It was several years ago, too- once our kids were in public school, they never finished in time to attend this camp!)

The activities are science/nature based, with some dissecting (minimal, but our kids were about 1st grade then) and lots of exploring the wetlands and beach area. Focus is on environmentalism. Our kids really enjoyed it, but as I said, it was a few years ago.

Don't have experience with this one, but thought it sounded good-

both day and residential programs through the Chesapeake Bay foundation. Again, maybe more nature-outdoorsy than you're looking for.

Hi, CTY does have day programs for rising 5th, quite a few in Md area. But for residential experience it is for those who completed 5 or 6th (and they are 3-weeks long). How about checking out Duke TIP, too?

The National Zoo (DC) has overnight summer camps for that age group - held in VA.

I've been looking at Fairfax Collegiate (day programs) but I haven't been able to find much feedback on them.

The University of Maryland offers some science/engineering camps and while they haven't yet updated their page for the coming summer, you can see what they offered last year here...

GMU also offers a variety of summer camps. They are finally starting to update the page, but the downside is it is basically empty right now. It will be here...
