DS is very happy with his TI-83 Plus, which he expects will meet his needs through high school. He says the main difference between it and a TI-84 is the amount of memory for downloadable games and other programs (I would assume these programs include play and practical things like engineering programs, but I don't know that).
We got ours used on Amazon for a quite reasonable price. Many colleges require them and then students sell them when they are done. Ours was in excellent condition.
PS I am not a mathy person either.
