Our 2nd grade son received his winter Math RIT score of 221. So far the school has provided scores in two strands -- 241+ for computation and 211-220 for geometry.
We are concerned about the spread and how this could influence placement.
We are also curious about the spiral method of Everyday Math. Does this method, applied at the 2nd/3rd grade level, provide enough information for a child to draw inferences at a 241+ computational level? If so, are there fundamentals that are missing? Is the gap between the two scores evidence of missing fundamentals?
Lastly, advice? We are meeting next week to devise a plan for our son. We are in a public school that uses IB k-12 but is struggling with NCLB. Our strong preference is to stay in the school district.
