Does anyone know much about John Hopkins or Northwestern Univ. or Stanford online course? I'm mostly interested in online learning for my DS9 in Math.

John Hopkins did a 5 year study on Math so I'm thinking of them as having lots of expertise with acceleration. They also have a advisor available for advocacy/counseling over the phone for a fee.

Northwestern Univ. seems to have more out of the box Math that would be great for enrichment that expands knowledge along with regular Math for credit.

I also heard Standford was good.

Anybody have anymore insight? or suggestions? I would like to bring this into my sons school at some point. We tried an online writing class this summer. It went well but I think he needs more maturity before he could do online at school without being too much teacher maintenance.
My daughter does math and language through Johns Hopkins CTY online. Up through the 6th grade, the math comes from Stanford's EPGY. After that, beginning with Prealgebra, the math comes from Thinkwell. You can see some of their videos on YouTube to see what they're like.
My daughter liked the EPGY format better, but I think they are both well done. There is good teacher support through JHU.
I don't know anything about Northwestern's program, I'm afraid.
Hope this helps.
BTW-I use CTY math & language for my homeschooling. It's kind of expensive, but very worth it, in my opinion.
I know someone who got into John Hopkins and is very satisfied.
His daugher who is in 5th grade is doing calculus.
John Hopkins you have to be nominated then pass the SCAT test.
Please tell me about your online Math experiences in school. I see this in our future for my DS9.

Did you bring in your own laptop?
Are you in public or private?
Did you have to pay for the class or the laptop?
How did it fit into the class?
Did other students react to this?
Was it destracting to other students?
Did your child wear a head set?
Did he need to move away from his regulaar seat?
What school/organization did you have the class with?
Did your DS have a instructor?
Did your school have someone oversee the class and communication?
For JHU's CTY a parent can do the nominating. There's no requirement for the school to cooperate or even condone a student's participation.
I found out that for 1st graders they just need an IQ of 127 or higher no SCAT test
Well I doubt my DS6 public school would allow online courses done in class. It kills me he is sitting there counting dots!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must ask. And maybe many, many times.

If the teacher & principal say no, ask "why not?"
If still no acceptable answer, contact the district & find out who is in charge of GATE (or equiv.) curriculum, and if no such person, then "standard" curric.

What helped me is that the district had it in their "approved" GATE curriculum. And, DS had been using at home for two years, which resulted in top scores on their beloved end-of-year standardized testing.
We did Stanford's EPGY accelerated math for my daughter who was 8 and in third grade. It worked about very well. We went straight through Stanford. She was able to take the ability test online and was admitted on the spot. School finally let her go up to GT room to do math, BUT, it wasn't during math, so she had to still sit through math. It is really good for motivated students. It has a ton of reporting, how many minutes they worked, what concepts covered, etc. which is helpful to bring to the school when trying to get them to believe what your child is capable of. And they really only access to a computer with a headset to hear the instructor. You do get an advisor who is in weekly contact with you. We didn't need help, but they are there if you do. HTH
AmyC15- did you have someone at the school supervising the course or do you?

That class sound wonderful. I wonder if the other online schools have the reporting like that. Did the school have any objections that is was not their "brand of Math".(for example we have saxon math at school) Does it matter that she is missing the other class?

I keep thinking that I need to have my son do a online course at home very independently before he could bring it into school. Was this her first experience with online learning? Did she just start this all on her own wit out anyone at school helping?

If you have any other advice on getting this into a school smoothly please let me know.

My son is a very motivated student. He loves math and I think this would be wonderful. My only concern is that he would experience this with no one to share his excitment with. But then again, I not sure anyone in his class get so excited about Math.
Online learning after school?

My DS9 is busy with sports 3 times a week. Right now he does about 15 to 30 minutes of Homework. It is all easy for him.

I would be interested in him trying an online learning class after school but I have some concerns. I don't feel like my son needs any more Homework time. I would like him to get to try this online learning at home more. Next summer, he is probally going to camp everyday so he probally won't want to do the online learning then unless I can find something not accellorated. I would like to be able to go to the school with it and say he can do this, see how it worked for him. I think this will be key to his success because the teacher maintance is the issue. My issue is fitting it in where it is enjoyable. I think I need to talk to the online schools again. If anyone has suggestions please advise. Thanks
hi Dandy,
Thank you for the advice. The public school is all new to me and so far sucks!
