Not sure where to post this but Learning Environments sounds good. I have only been to our local library a few times but went there today to return some kids DVDs and noticed they have a new summer reading quest for kids so I asked about it and ended up signing up both boys. The kids are required to read (or listen to) certain number of books in different categories and levels and here comes the cool part. They let me sign up DS3.3 in the 1st-3rd grade reading level category! There were 3 categories. Listeners (3-K), 1st-3rd, and 4th-6th. I put DS4.9 in the listeners where he really belongs. But with the younger one, they just said "oh, it's so wonderful that the younger one can read and so well!" and then even put little note on the sign up card explaining that while he's pre-school age, he reads independently and does not listen to books read to him so nobody would question it. How awesome is this?

That's excellent. Sounds like a fun program for your boys, too!

They have all kinds of little prizes for the kids once they reach certain number of books. It's a big library built just couple years ago and the staff always seems really friendly! I guess that's one area where I see our property tax money well spent! lol

That library really does rock!

DS is currently in a summer reading program (sheet given from the 1st grade he's to go to) that only asks how many minutes he "reads" and to list the title of the book.

He's reading Geronimo Stilton right now. Silently. What grade is that?

The current book, Wild, Wild West, has an undertaker as a character. DS asked about an undertaker and what they did. Interesting conversation in our house this summer!

I'm so happy you have a library that recognizes reading interests at all ages. smile Send them a Thank You note!

DD was very into Geronimo Stilton at that age too - not sure what grade it 'really' is at though. Another cool series that she loved was the 'Magic Treehouse' which similarly to GS really immersed the reader into the environment in which the story was set.
