Is there a way to help DS10 where it doesn't feel schoolish with probability and Statistics for 5th grade Math?

He liked the Sir Cumference and the dragon of pi : a math adventure and similiar book a few years. Any book recommendations?

At 5th grade, I recall using science topics to discuss statistics and probability.

Using a color spinner and plotting results is one way of doing this simply.

Another way is to use a 'penny' box to simulate a Gaussian distribution or decay curve and explain that the variance is random, etc. and can be predicted by using statistics.

In other words, we looked for real-world applications of simple statistical models-- dice (esp. the more interesting RPG dice if you want a challenge), coins, spinners, etc.

The mathematical relationships are a pretty organic extension of all of that.

There's the Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks series.

There's a Murderous Maths book about probability.

The MEP website has some online probability activities.

There's a wonderful Mitsumasa Anno book about probability and permutations/combinations, too--Socrates and the Three Little Pigs.

Yes, the Anno book mentioned is marvelous-- I remember that one.
