Hi all.My DD10 wants to go see Fifth Wave rated pg13.I almost let her go then I noticed no other kids were at the theater,so I got out of line. But she said while we were leaving everyone in her class goes to pg13 movies but one other 10 yr old.So I am wondering what's the protocol in this case from others with experience here? She was talking on the way to it,that bad language would be involved and that some how she could magically not be affected from what she would be hearing.I myself find that assault on my senses very disturbing to the point of making a disturbance if it involves a person physically present. We were sitting in a hamburger joint when a couple sit next to our booth and spew the f word every 3 seconds it seemed, and this was an adult male, who sat eyeing his tattoo of a cross on his forearm for a lengthy period.DA'sThe place was empty except for us.I would call it a crime of opurtunity, the way it went down.

We check with Common Sense Media. We took dd10 and ds8 to see The Martian which is rated PG13 for bad language and brief nudity. (The nudity was a posterior shot to show how emaciated the astronaut had become.) CSM warned us of this, we were able to talk to our children about it and they enjoyed the film.

We also plan to take them to see Eddie the Eagle. Honestly, I am really disappointed that this "family" film is rated PG13, they couldn't clean it up enough for a G or a PG?

I don't think I would take dd10 to see The 5th Wave after reading the book. It is definitely a teen book, so I assume the movie will skew older.

I guess it comes down to message. If they have to hear a couple of f-bombs to get the message about perseverance, hard work, believing in oneself, etc...I am okay with that, not thrilled, but okay. I am not okay with a PG13 for a movie that is only for entertainment.

We also check with Common Sense Media to decide. It tells you literally every swear word, innuendo, naked body part, implied sex act, sight of blood, etc. It's kind of bizarre to see a movie broken down that way, but it does help us decide whether the movie falls within our family's sensibilities.
