I wanted to take the Hey Math! discussion out of the other thread.

Questions, I looked at both the US and Singapore version and I think if we try one it will be the Singapore version. It covers similar things like the Singapore Math books, a few things are introduced at different times, but it's similar enough.

My main reason is that Singapore version would give me access to Primary 3 - Primary 6 + Secondary 1, where US version covers only 3rd-5th grade. If I want it to last for a year I better go beyond 5th grade.

I still haven't had DS5 to look at it. I need to catch him in the right mindset wink

I emailed them on their support page with the same question. I'll let you know what they say. FYI, I signed up for a trial period of US version and I have access to everything through Gr. 12.

When you say you signed up for a trial, is Singapore online like Aleks?
When I checked it out several months ago, I didn't see an option like that, but maybe I didn't look closely enough.

It's not Singapore Online. It's Hey Math! Different complany. But they have a Singaporean version, as opposed to the US version. Singapore Math doesn't have an online version to my knowledge.

Confusing!

Hey, I am back!!!
Please do write more about Hey Math!

Welcome back Ania. How was your vacation?

Here is the link
http://www.heymath.com

I would say it looks interesting and something DS5 could explore on his own. It could be a nice math toy so to speak assuming that he even likes it.

My vacation was FANTASTIC!!!
Although very pricey - with the weak dollar anything in Europe is very expensive. Gas was almost $9 a gallon - imagine that!!!

I did get a huge break from all that schooling and unschooling / a huge benefit. I took my kids to some live plays in my native language and I was pleasantly surprised that both of them quite enjoyed it! Also, I was quite shocked by Ghosts's knowledge of some of the plays that we were able to see - I guess you never know what the school is going to teach them !!! Teenagers do not communicate very well!
Packing for some camping trips now! I love to travel.
On the side note - Ghost, in spite of being the best in his ALG II class last year got the lower note from behaviour. Do you know why? Because he had missed the last two weeks of school for family vacation. None of us cares, but it was a bizzare thing..
Happy travels...

I know. We were in Europe in May and it's quite an expensive hobby with such a weak dollar. I don't even want to get into car rental prices.

What??? How can they mark him down because of a family vacation? The kid has no control when his family takes vacation and I really doubt he missed anything.

Back to Hey Math! I had DS5 try it today and I think we will go for the 15-day trial. He tried "Ratio Model Method" demo (listed as 6th grade material there as I noticed later on). Even though it was difficult for him he managed to get through it without melting down. The demo broke the problem nicely into small steps and kind of walked him through the problem. I think that was the reason why we didn't give up in the middle or right at the beginning.

The only thing that I am concerned about is that the program got stuck twice waiting for the connection with Hey Math! Questions, have you experienced the same problem?
Posted By: questions Re: Hey Math! - 07/09/08 03:59 AM
Yes. Very frustrating. We also did one of the ratio models (aliens and spaceships). When I hear back from them, I'll ask about the delays. Thanks for mentioning it - I had thought the problem was somehow on my end. DS just hated EPGY, and this looks like perfect fun math for the summer. Color, sound and animation, hip, hip, hooray! And I enjoy the accents.

Exactly. DS5 needs colors, animation, and such. It has to have 5 year old appeal and 10 year old content smile

That's bad that you are experiencing problems as well. The most frustrating part is that you cannot go directly to let's say Question 3 if it gets stuck in between. You have to repeat Question 2. At least in the demo version frown

Sorry for taking so long to post this, but figured you'd want to know the following (received in an email from HeyMath! customer support):

Quote
- A major portion of our resources overlap in the US and Singapore editions as the content/concepts of mathematics across both the countries is almost similar. However, the content is indexed and categorized (class/grade levels) as per the curriculum in the respective country. Also, the content is customized to cater to the manner in which mathematics is taught in each of these countries, vocabulary /terminology variations and finally the advancement across different grade levels.

- Also, we have HeyMath! PRIME (Program from Raffles Institution for Mathematics Enrichment) which is targeted specifically at higher ability students. Developed in collaboration with Singapore's # 1 school Raffles Institution, HeyMath! PRIME combines HeyMath!'s expertise in innovative digital pedagogy and Raffles Institution's rigorous assessment methodology.

They very nicely offered to speak by phone, but I haven't had time. Meanwhile, this may help some of you.

p.s. - the PRIME program does include calculus.

I wish I knew about the PRIME program. What level does it start at? I got the Singapore version. I think it will go great with the Singapore math wink

It said age 10-13, but it's really broken up by subject matter. I'm sure you could email them and ask and/or switch. They are very responsive and very nice.

Following with interest. Please update if you decide to use and let us know how your children liked it and if you would recommend.

Thanks,
Neato
p.s.-It would be great if your DS likes this!
