I went to a FL DOE conference this week for SES providers. I had the pleasure of listening to Manuel Scott, one of the original Freedom Writers, who is now a motivational speaker. His message is so much more than inspirational, it's almost beyond words. He is truly an amazing young man. If you ever have an opportunity to hear him speak, do not pass it up. I came home & watched the movie "Freedom Writers" immediately. I highly recommend it. One of the last things he said was that we are enough just as we are to change those around us; we don't need more degrees or different jobs. We just need to realize that we are enough.

I also met a couple of women who were such a blessing to me. One owns/operates a reading clinic for children with learning differences. She has a wealth of knowledge about dyslexia. I shared my dd12's story and she gave me some simple things to work on with her. She also told me I could call her anytime. So amazing.

The other lady I met has a tutoring business that she sought out after having to work with her son to get him through elementary school. He is one of those kids who "fell through the cracks" because he didn't need help badly enough (not unlike dd12). We talked about how important it is to advocate for our own children.

Even though I went to this seminar for business purposes, I was able to find so much more support for me that will help my daughter. And that gave me hope for her that I did not realize I even needed.

ginger - I am so glad you found support and inspiration at the conference. You are right - you never know when someone or something will touch you life in an important way. It sounds like you were given a gift of hope that will keep you going along the journey to help your daughter. Thank you for sharing your story.
