I asked to see the school counselor to talk to him about my DD8's emotional OE and suggestions for handling it. She is in a calm period right now and I am looking more for guidance for future reference. He suggested that I bring her with. I'm not sure how I fell about this. Any thoughts?

I'd think about what you will be discussing and if you think your dd would do well to hear your concerns. If not, then tell the counselor you won't do that.

I agree with MON. I think it depends on what you want to discuss. I know in the past with my own children, when I have wanted them to see the counsellor, I have had a meeting ahead of time to give the counsellor a heads up about the issue at hand.

Thanks for the input. She does know the counselor because he participates in their class meetings. DD8 is in a good place right now -- getting along well with her teacher, likes her table group, not having friend issues, etc. I planned to talk to the counselor as a proactive measure, i.e. how can I support her when things start to fall apart again? DD8 is emotionally OE. She can take the slightest misstep and have it ruin her whole day/week. She is incredibly sensitive and hard on herself. According to her teacher, she handles things well at school and then falls apart at home. Sometimes I feel like I am being handed a live grenade at the end of the school day. In addition, DD8 periodically has self-esteem issues and questions whether she is gifted (her FSIQ IQ is in the 99.9 percentile) because of her dyslexia issues (mom, why can't I spell?). I told her what I planned to discuss with the counselor and asked if she wants to go. She doesn't want to go. I am planning to leave her home.

I think if I were to seek counseling for my children I would get to know the counselor well first. I like the idea of someone with gifted experience helping a gifted child.

When I think back to someone who was recomended by our pediatrian, I realize the time with her and my child was not very helpful.

I can totally relate to this. I greet my kids with hugs and kisses and it's all good on the way to the car but any time after that it can all change. It's hard to deal with. some days I'm fried before dinner.

One day I took my kids to the track after school to run. It feels like DS has lots of aggrevation to burn off.
