I realize this is kinda new, but hoping someone with someone older has been there, done that.

Our public school district is accelerating a small group of kids 3 grades in math. Starting in 6th grade, they can test into algebra. This path has them taking calculus their sophomore year. Therefore, they are done with the normal high school math their Junior or Senior year. They can take Physics, which has a pre-calculus requirement. They can take Chemistry, which has an algebra requirement. There is math in those science classes. Some parents are having their kids take statistics just to keep them in math.

The vast majority of these kids are thinking about engineering or medicine as a career. My son is thinking engineering. We have an engineering elective--Project Lead the Way. The Freshman year class has a prerequisite of algebra 1.

Curious what others think about this.

It's interesting how different high schools can be. Our local public high school offers AP Calculus AB, AP Calculis BC, and Calculus 3, Differential Equations.

AP calculus can mean either AB or BC. In our school typically just seniors take AB.. Seniors and juniors are more likely to take BC. Our school has multivariable which is calculus 3. So it's common after that to take AP stats though you can take the stats earlier. In regards to the PLTW I knows it popular in junior high but not as popular in high school because it's not an honors class to later and there is no AP I believe for it.

Actually, our school recently got approval from AP to use PLTW's computers coursework for AP Computer Science. As we're a tech school with a PLTW engineering program, this means we now have an entire cohort going through this. You might see if your school will do the same: https://www.pltw.org/news/pltws-com...officially-endorsed-by-the-college-board

You might also look into online coursework in college math, either through a local college/university, or through a virtual provider, like Virtual High School. If there's a cohort (as it sounds like there will be), a compromise between hiring a high-level math specialist and going it alone online might be to assign a math teacher as a tutor and proctor to supervise the whole class as they take their online course together.

We have those classes in our District but they are part of the math Department. PLTW is part of our Applied Technology department .
