Posted By: ruazkaz Online writing course for rising 8th grader? - 05/12/16 12:37 AM
I saw a thread before recommending several websites for writing assistance but I cannot find it now? I remember reading very good reviews of onlineG3 but we cannot use them as my son is in a charter school and the timing of the courses does not fit.

DS is very accelerated in math but writing could be better and he is interested in improving it before he enters high school.

I would appreciate a link to old threads discussing this same issue or if not then other recommendations. Thanks
Have you checked into CTY or Athena's?
If you have a decent community college system, then you may want to consider taking writing classes there as well. Many colleges have some online courses available although he may need to come in for exams in some cases. Your DS can take a basic freshman composition course or try something a bit more upper level (with permission from the department) depending on areas of interest. NUMATS also has some online writing classes available and so does CTY although NUMATS has a more affordable fee structure.

Oops, just noticed that this was from last year.
Even though it is from last year the problem still exists...we have reached out to two teachers that have been recommended but one no longer tutors and the other says she is interested but then never responds. We are going to contact her again at the beginning of the school year.

If this does not work I will look at the community college courses. DS is pretty busy so the ideal situation would be a tutor that would give him writing assignments and then feedback but that is a surprisingly difficult thing to find.

Thanks again!
This old post mentions Purdue OWL. A parent could potentially guide a child through the Online Writing Lab.
I have to add that for DS in the area of writing, a private tutor would likely not yield the best results for him. Unlike DD, he rarely writes for fun and is very lazy about polishing. DS actually needs the bit of pressure from the realities of a college transcript and the opinions of fellow students (peer critiques) to help him put forth reasonable efforts.
Somewhere on here in another thread someone recommend Mizzou K-12 Online. Haven't tried it myself but we're also looking for an online writing class.

EDITED: Well, never mind. I emailed them and they said they are not currently offering their middle school classes and hope to offer them again "soon", but I didn't get any sense of when. And the person didn't answer my other questions.
It is surprisingly difficult to find a tutor/teacher to read a paper written by him, make comments and return it to him for review. We have contacted several.
My son's writing tutor does tutoring by skype and email correspondence. She is FABULOUS! She is active in Mensa and homeschooled her gifted kids. Do you want her website info?
Sanne, I would sure like her info! Thanks.
