HEROES has worked with Rutgers University to offer special sections of Basic Composition (355:100) and Expository Writing (355:101) that will have the same requirements and standards as other sections of these courses but use reading material that will be developmentally appropriate for students 16 or younger. Please read Searching for Shakespeare about special issues regarding young students enrolling in college level writing courses.

The first section of 355:101 (aka Expos 101) will be offered in Spring 2011 and will meet on Sat 9-12. At least one section of each course will be offered M, W, Th 10:10-12:10 during the summer.

Students will need to take the Writing Placement Test and obtain a special permission code to register for these courses. Students should also consider participating in the Writing Talent Search in order to get a better understanding of the type of writing that will be required for these courses and to obtain feedback from instructors who teach these courses.

The Writing Placement Test will be offered in December and again during the Third Annual HEROES Conference in January. Go to http://www.heroesgifted.org/courses for additional information.
What a marvelous idea!
Hi there,

Can you clarify if a student needs to meet HEROES membership criteria to participate (or at least apply to participate?). Does meeting HEROES membership criteria guarantee a spot?

Thanks so much, you are doing great work.

Cat
Qualifying Test Scores may be found at:

HEROES also runs the Writing Talent Search as an identification tool that may be used to qualify for HEROES. You may find information about it at http://www.heroesgifted.org/writing_talent_search/front_page

Being a DYS also is a means of qualifying.
Sorry, I wasn't very clear. My question was "do you need to be in HEROES or meet the criteria to participate in the talent search?" I think from what you posted that the answer is no, and that one can actually qualify for HEROES via the talent search?

Thanks, Cat
Correct. You DO NOT need to qualify for HEROES in order to participate in the Writing Talent Search. In fact since the Writing Talent Search is designed to be an identification tool, participation may be your means of qualifying for HEROES.
