Hi all,
It looks like we're moving to Houston this summer, and I'll need to find a public elementary for my current 3rd grader, and an early childhood program for my very mildly autistic 3 year old. My husband's job will be downtown, so I don't want to go too far out.
Does anyone have any recommendations on schools?

Hi! and Welcome! Houston is huge (area-wise) and has a ton of options, depending on your needs.
We are in HISD in a GT magnet program that seems to be working well for my 1st grader. You are past the testing deadline for Magnet Vanguard, but there might be something in place for transferring students. You'd want to check with Advanced Academics on that, they are on HISD's website.
Spring Branch has some very good schools, as does Cy-Fair, but if you want to be close in you will probably be dealing with monolithic HISD.

Preschool is very local. If you know the area that would make it easier to pin down some options.
Thanks Saritz and lilswee, I'm hoping to stay within HISD if I can figure out a school, I will contact Advanced Academics to enquire about transfers. We're leaving a district that doesn't provide gifted services unfortunately, so hopefully they'll be willing to look at our independent testing as well as our current state test results.
I'm stuck between trying to find a school, that's in an area we like, but the area has to have the right school for us to like it!
I need some advice about our decision to move to a country (Canada or else???). We live in a very small country, in the middle of the ocean, with nothing, absolutely nothing about giftedness. Recently, some months ago, I met someone who opened my eyes about giftedness when I shared about all the difficulties we had been and still were enduring with our son, now 18, at school. Later, we understood that he was a gifted child who has not been detected earlier and was in great difficulties.
The question is what to do now? Is it too late. We believe that he needs therapy and get reconciled with studies even if he says that he wants to go back to school. But where? And what to propose?
We are ready to immigrate if necessary because he still need to find his way. Really need some advice about other countries and reality... Is it really necessary to move to another country???
We are ready to do it? Is it worth because we don't know other countries reality? At the same time, I feel deeply concerned about his future. I believe that he needs guidance, help and to go back to school, as he is doing nothing, for the time being.
So please, your opinion will be most welcomed...
I know this is old, but the Harmony charter school in Houston has been rated one of the best public schools in the nation for like, the past 3 years straight... We've had an excellent experience with our local Harmony Science Academy so far.
