My ds is currently being assessed using the IAS. He's newly 7 and in the 1st grade. He's recently been spending about half of his time in a 2nd grade classroom at his school.

Something was said to me today by his 1st grade teacher that has be scratching my head.

He said that my ds was being given the "3rd grade test". I didn't know the IAS had separate grade level testing like that.

So, I guess my question is... if he's in 1st grade, should he be getting the 1st grade test, or since the school year is almost over and he'd probably finish in 2nd grade and go into 3rd grade next year, is the 2nd or 3rd grade test what he should be taking?

I'm just a little confused, and there isn't much info about this available online.

Thanks : )

The Iowa Acceleration Scale is used if they are considering to move your son up to a higher grade in certain subjects or even for a full grade skip. (it was used with my dd for a grade skip) Part of the IAS has questions/rating scales based on how the child performed on above-level testing.

I suspect that the school was giving your ds a "third grade test" as an above level test so that they would have some information about your son in order to complete that section of the IAS.

When they finish all the sections of the IAS, they will add up the points for each item/rating scale and it will be used to determine if your child is recommended for subject or grade acceleration.
