How is a MAP score of 233 in grade 3 and 240 in grade 4?

What has been the scores in 3rd/4th grade MAP test for most of the high math achievers in the forum here - if some of you would like to share.

My DD10 scored Q- in Cogat (all her tests were incomplete but accurate, what may be the consequences of that?) She has consistently scored between 95 and 98 percentile in MAP tests. She is in 4th grade. What does this suggest?

Using the newer MAPS chart, those scores are above the 99th percentile for grade assuming that they are fall MAPS scores. The 3rd grade one is higher than the 4th which is what we saw for my oldest in Math MAPS as well from fall to spring in 4th primarily b/c they didn't teach her anything in math that year.

Is she being accelerated in math at all or are her CogAT scores something that the school considers strongly in acceleration/advanced classes?

My oldest's weakest area is math and, while I can't recall her MAPS scores exactly (she only took MAPS twice -- at the start and end of 4th and she a 9th grader now), I do know that they weren't as high as your dd's. She's still done very well with one year of acceleration in math. She skipped a grade which, effectively, subject accelerated her in math since she was going up at least a year in everything.

Thank you Cricket2!

The school doesn't include an acceleration program (I have never been told about it nor have I heard it from anyone else).

The MAP scores are for Winter.

DD8 MAP score in grade 3 is 233 in winter and my DD10 has the MAP score of 240 in Winter in grade 4.

Ah, sorry I didn't catch that this was two different kids.

You can look @ the MAPS charts here: http://www.nwea.org/sites/www.nwea.org/files/resources/NWEA_2011_RIT_Scale_Norms.pdf in case you don't already have the link.

For winter, your 3rd grader is still right at the 99th percentile and your 4th grader would be at the 98th. Still very good scores.

The MAP score is 99% for 3r grade for my son and the mean is 7th grade/8th grade.

What does this really tell? The child can learn what half of the 7th graders are learning? This part of MAP always confuses me.

Has anyone else seen a Q- in COGAT test for their kids even in a high math aptitude kid.

A mean score that falls at the seventh grade level means that a seventh grader scoring at the 50th percentile for grade (an "average seventh grader") would have the same score.

Don't discount your 4th grader's achievement just because it isn't at the 99th percentile...it's above the 50th percentile for 11th graders. The time is near to start high school math courses for her, if this hasn't already been done.

Q- (accurate but incomplete) could be a sign of perfectionism, or it could be a sign of slow processing speed or poor motor control making it hard to finish the test on time.

I'm curious what a Q- is? My ds had the CogAT through school as screening for our district's gifted program, but I never received an actual report, was only told his scores in terms of percentiles... which weren't terribly high btw! He's really consistent on testing in general, but he's one of those kids for whom CogAT came out much lower than you'd expect based on his WISC/WJ-III etc.

We don't have MAPS testing here so I can't help with that!

Q- means a relative weakness in quantitative.

Anyone with a profile score can enter it here for help with interpretation.
