Does anyone know how out of level the MPG goes for 1st grade. I thought it was around 3rd grade. And how high does that RiT go for fall? TIA

Not sure I understand what information you are looking for here. My ds took primary MAP in kinder and first grade. His math score in spring of 1st with it was 235.

My son has been given scratch paper for MAP testing as has my older daughter. 235 was 94th percentile for 4th grade spring.It is the average spring score for 8th grade. It is the score that says a child is ready for algebra according to NWEA.

The MAP is split into the three different groups, and there is some overlap, but it is not like you can just keep going and getting the higher level complete test if you don't miss anything when you're in a lower level. E.g., if you are taking the 2-5 test, and you answer everything correctly in a category, you will get some questions from the next level (6+), but you will not get all of the questions. Thus, if NWEA says a 235 qualifies you for algebra, if you look closely it probably has an asterisk that says "a 235 on the 6+ test", where you get all the questions.

If your kiddo is getting all top scores, I would ask that the next time he be tested on the next level (2-5 or 6+ as applicable). Then you can get some more meaningful data beyond the fact that your kid is way advanced for his grade level.

I was giving you a primary MAP score . The first time he took MAP (in kinder), they did not give him scratch paper. After that they did.

I did ask that he receive the 2-5 test in 1st grade last spring. I was told NO by the district gifted coordinator.

I also dont think my son is ready for full out algebra as he does have some weekness in there. That being said, he easily is completing my 4th grade daughters 5th grade accelerated math.

My son's school never used the primary MAP (they started in 2nd, and they also allowed my son to take it when he was in kindy), so I really know little about the primary MAP. Except that I've heard other scores that were higher than a supposed 200 ceiling, just like your son's.

frannieandejsmom - That is too bad they wouldn't allow your 1st grader to take the higher level test. You may have a year or two with the 2-5 MAP that will give you meaningful info. It seems to me that MAP is really only useful in the early years for GT kids. (But perhaps that's only true for the 2-5 version.)

My daughter is a 6th grader and in the District's magnet program(It's the same district as Frannie's)What I learned is when she started in third grade there was a big range in the MAP math scores. There were a couple kids 20-25 points ahead of her.(and she was in the 99 percentile) They are all in sixth grade algebra now and there scores have pretty much evened up. I know there was a kid last year who was a sixth grader that took Geometry at the junior high but he was more the exception than the rule. St. pauli girl is probably right in the early years it might matter but by sixth grade it doesn't seem to matter that much.
