My DS6 loves comics but it drives me crazy that they spell so many words wrong on purpose like "laffs" instead of "laughs"
I am not buying anymore, I am afraid it will screw my DS up.
My DS asked my about "Laffs" so I know it is not good for him. Why do the comics do this??? I guess the older kids know the words are spelled wrong on purpose??

I don't know about comic books, but the Junie B Jones books do it too. They are also written like a kindergarterner might usually talk. My DD6 gets confused about why they are not written correctly, and while she likes the stories in the books she doesn't like reading them because herself becasue of the bad grammar.

Oh really??? I didn't notice that about the Junie B books. My DS6 had to read one for school this year. I forget which one. I have to go and take a look. I don't get why books do this. The comics are sooooo bad.

I have enjoyed ds' devouring comics & it has not been an issue with spelling. He did start with cartoons like calvin & hobbes and peanuts, which don't mispell stuff. I was also perusing 'classic comics' which they still print and I loved when I was a kid.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the tip about calvin and hobbes and peanuts.
The captain underpants really got to me. They spell "hipnotize" as "hipnotise" on the cover! My DS6 will not know that is misspelled unless I point it out. When I told him comics spell words on purpose sometimes he said "well, at least you told me". At his age it would confuse him.

ooooh! yes, once you get the mispelling thing going it's a very messy time!! NO ONE here should be throwing stones on that front, I am thinking
wink

You're right, I think at least in america it is hypnotize...not sure if that varies in other countries.

Also, I wanted to post the Classics Illustrated web page, I think this is the right one...took me a while to dig up.

Speaking of hip vs hyp:

I can remember years ago (I would say about high school... may have been college, not 100% sure) that I completely drew a blank on how to spell the word "use". I wrote it correctly, but then kept erasing it and rewriting it, starting with both a y and a u, over and over again. It was crazy!

My DS6 brought a comic to me one day to let me know that the editor wasn't very good because there were lots of spelling errors!
Posted By: traceyqns Re: Comic Books And Reading! - 03/25/09 03:18 PM
WOW Shari that is something. At least he realized it. Even if the older kids who read them do get that it is a joke, I am sure not all of them do. I dk why they do it. Does it really make the comic book a better read? I don't read them so I don't get it.

My DS6 requires everthing be by the rules.... Even spelling!

He might like the book "Mr Perfect" By Roger Hargnedves (last name is hard to read). It is cute, it is Ironic (if that is the right word to use). Ex he had a party and Mr Clumsey broke all the plate , this did not upset Mr Perfect he brought out paper plates etc. So nothing upset Mr Perfect he was perfectly happy with whatever went wrong. It is cute.
My DS6 picked it out at barnes and nobles this weekend he said "it was perfect for him" LOL!

Your son might like the book "Ish". Can't remember who the author is. But it deals with perfectionism and the differing perspectives of different people. It makes a really good point and DS6 realated really well to it.
