My older child has had his reading/writing homework made easier. He is in 3rd grade.
It started out that the kids had to read a minimum of 90 minutes a week and answer 4 out of 12 questions. He usually filled up an entire page or 2 in his homework journal.

Homework is sent on Friday to give the children time to complete.Teacher changed it to 80 minutes a week of reading, and 5 very easy questions that all fit on 1 printed page glued in the reading log. There is a small box next to each question with room to write at the most 2 sentences.Only one question a day has to be answered. His mind has come up with a dozen reasons why the teacher did this.

I learned from a little bird this morning at drop off that parents complained, it was to hard, taking too much time at home to complete. If it was sent home on Friday, that gave the kids 7 days to complete the work. 13 minutes a day of reading and 5 questions in 7 days was to much?

I have been putting off formal IQ testing from school. He is privately diagnosed ADHD NOS inattentive and has a below average processing speed. I let my younger aspies psych. give him a few tests. The psych. says it would be unfair to him to give a full IQ test as he would not score a min. of 130 due to his ADD and processing speed to even get in gifted program. Even on his meds.Psych says he knows he would score high average. This is the same psych who tested my youngest who has aspergers and has been treating my youngest for well over a year and my oldest for more than 7 months.

My kids attend a good enough school. Though it is Title 1 they have many good programs and specials. I know they use a modified Gifted criteria for AGP program. I know if we made less money he would score high enough to get into it. I think my county only requires 115-120 and high test scores on SAT 10. His stanines in reading and such were in the 99th percentiles in 1,2nd grade. It is only a matter of time before I am asked yet again permission to test.

I have not shared my private info about oldest with the school. I am still working out the kinks with the AGP for 6 year old who does fully test at over 140.
I am feeling overwhelmed. It is only the 4th week of school.
I can enrich him at home, offer up a lot of reading and writing for fun. But there is something he loved about the prior homework. Maybe it offered him a way to shine, show his best writing to the teacher without the pressure of being at school and no time limits.
If you got this far...thank you for reading.

If the real reason was that parents were complaining (as opposed to all the kids being fairly wordy in responses, making it difficult for the teacher), I would definitely assume that he could get the old work back.

Sorry he's dealing with this.
It was definitely not due to wordy responses. The teacher used his homework and 2 other kids journals as examples of what she expected before the change. The class was allowed to take a peek at them if they wanted to. She left them on a table in the back of the room so the kids could randomly peak without being singled out.
My son told me yesterday that many of the kids were not doing the majority of the homework and the teacher had a talk with the class about the importance of reading every night and answering the questions daily.

He asked me to write a note asking if he could do both. I told him he needs just ask her this morning. I hope he does. : )
