The link that Kriston provided is on my bookmarks bar and I play (or rather I try) every day.

Hello, my name is 'isa' and I am SETOHOLIC.

Pity I cannot do more than one set a day.
Or is it a blessing?

Hello, my name is Cathy and I am a SEToHolic.

I know I have a problem, but I don't want to stop playing...yet.

I too am a SEToholic. I not only play on line but I also play the card game daily.

Isa, get the card game so you can play more than one time a day!!! smile

Between books and SET, I have become responsible for many bad habits among you. Sorry! blush

P.S. Did you see this link? http://www.nytimes.com/ref/crosswords/setpuzzle.html
There are 4 puzzles a day there! smile

Yes, Kriston. I know about that... I am fully corrupted.
Posted By: Kriston Re: SET - 07/03/08 12:14 AM
Eeeeeexcellent! <rubbing hands together in an evil fashion>

But I think Isa must not know if she's only playing once per day.
Posted By: EandCmom Re: SET - 07/03/08 12:16 AM
I'm fully corrupted too!!! But even that isn't enough. That is why I need the cards!!! LOL!!!! grin

Posted By: Kriston Re: SET - 07/03/08 12:17 AM
700 total, combined? I think I made THAT cut!

wink
Posted By: EandCmom Re: SET - 07/03/08 12:18 AM
I believe I got a bit over 700 combined too!!! LOL!!!
Posted By: crisc Re: SET - 07/03/08 01:58 AM
I had never played before but the link Kriston posted in this thread really got me intrigued. Where was the original link? I just played all 4 from the New York Times and I am hooked.

Mwah-ha-ha-ha! The evil SET mistress hooks another victim!

(Thanks for the assist there, EandCMom!)

P.S. Hi, Crisc! Give the penguin a hug from us. wink

I just did one in 2min! My personal best! He He He. Sadly, my 5yr old is better at Set than I am. We have the cards also but the boys like playing online.

Thanks.A.LOT. I have stayed up last two hours playing SET.

I'll have to see if DW and FIL can beat me.

My new personal best is finding all six sets in 32 seconds.

Afraid your DS will beat the pants off you, eh? laugh
Posted By: Kriston Re: SET - 07/03/08 02:24 PM
Cathy, you ROCK!

I still can't break a minute! But I never go as long as 2 minutes. So my average is quite good, but my personal best is still 1 minute, 5 seconds.

Grrrrr!

frown I can't get the NY times 4-set site to open... boo hoo!
I'm hovering around 2 minutes in my one-a-day set games. I suppose I could pull out the actual set game and play more, but I'm all for moderation!
Posted By: Kriston Re: SET - 07/03/08 04:22 PM
Is this the link you're using?

http://www.nytimes.com/ref/crosswords/setpuzzle.html

It opened for me, so maybe you just had a glitch?
Posted By: st pauli girl Re: SET - 07/03/08 04:26 PM

Maybe, one day.

He is still 5 months old. Its scary enough that he unsnapped the safety strap on his diaper changing station last night when I was in the kitchen heating his bottle. I am sure it was "unintentional".

When I signed off last night, I realized last night that the SET game is really just asking you to find a projection of a sparse matrix.

Its trivially solved by ordering ALL the possible items in a matrix then placing the given items in that emptied matrix and then drawing the allowable lines between adjacent items in the resulting populated matrix. You can either translate the given items into a notation set and solve for the required projection or just project the matrix in your mind.

For more SET math, check this out: http://www.setgame.com/set/mathtricks.htm

My speed solving strategy relies on looking for certain easy-to-spot sets first and then systematically finding the rest. That means that I can be really fast if certain sets are present.

Austin, I think SET is a shape-sorter game for grown-ups smile

??? confused ???
Posted By: Austin Re: SET - 07/07/08 03:25 PM
Cheating - Looking up things BEFORE you figure them out.

Posted By: Kriston Re: SET - 07/07/08 03:32 PM
But the point of the game is not to figure out the math behind it. It's to find the sets.

Of course, if you like figuring out the math and that's how you make the game fun for yourself, then you don't have to read the link. That's fine. But I don't see how it's cheating to read about the math behind the game.

I guess I'd call it learning, not cheating! wink
Posted By: Cathy A Re: SET - 07/07/08 03:38 PM
Yes, I offered the link in the spirit of sharing some interesting math with others.

I have done some thinking about the math behind SET myself. I appreciate the elegance of the presentation in the link.

Ya'll convinced me to buy Set for dd9 for her birthday. She enjoys the game, but dd5 is addicted. She is very good and can beat even experienced adults. I didn't even realize she was a visual-spatial kid. She wants to play everyday so I showed her the online version.

Kriston, you can put another notch in your SET belt.

Posted By: Ania Re: SET - 08/06/08 04:06 PM
Cathy - SET was on the table for two meetings at the math circle my DS attends. They had lectures and exercises on the math behind it.
Posted By: Kriston Re: SET - 08/06/08 04:21 PM
grin
Posted By: Dazed&Confuzed Re: SET - 08/06/08 04:59 PM
I like the online version. I find that w/ the cards, I'm convinced there is a set if only I look long enough rather than everyone agreeing to add more cards.
Posted By: Austin Re: SET - 08/12/08 04:33 PM
My DW is now ADDICTED!!!
