I know it requires a SAT math score of at least 700 before the age of 13 to qualify, but then what do you get out of it? Is it just recognition or is there something else involved? I think it stands for Study of Exceptional Talent so are they actually studying something? Does anyone have a child in it?

(I checked the website, I'm looking for a more personal viewpoint from an insider)

Thanks

I haven't heard anything about that. I do get a little nervous about anyone who is overly excited to study my child.

One can also qualify for set in 'Verbal' and one can qualify after the 13th birthday, but the scores have to be higher. They offer a magazine, and cunsulting services to help the parents evaluate the educational option.

I'm not an insider, but I'm really glad that kid with logs beyond my child's log have a place to met and share information. I feel like too much of a pioneer as it is!

As mentioned, I don't know anything about that program. But if you think it is a good thing, I'm sure it is!
I hope your son does make it in and it helps him and your family!

As a funny aside, did anyone else think log cabin when seeing "log," "logs," and "pioneer" in that paragraph? The associative nature of my brain took WAAAAAAY too long to figure out what "log" actually meant because of it.

Must...get...coffee...

Sorry. Back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Basically, SET is a secret society for highly gifted kids. So secretive, those who are in SET rarely talk about it.

Kids can get in by taking SAT test before 13 year old. If verbal or math score is higher than 700, they will be invited in. Most kids who get in are math/science type.

As for what the tangible benefit of SET, not too much. You get some free magazines and newsletters with stories of other overachieving kids. They are also invited to participated in certain restricted website such as cogito.org. SET members have their own chat room where occasionally they talk about nerdy things.

If your kid plan to take SAT test in 7th grade as many do for CTY and get above 700, then that is great. You get SET for free. But I don't think it worth the trouble of hiring a tutor for SAT prep at that age.

here is an article about SET. It is a bit old, but best reference that I can find.

"It is hoped that the students serve as role models for each other, stimulating and supporting high achievement."

That's where I would find it valuable. I do feel these kids need to find one another and connect.
