Hi everyone,

After being told that dd was 'smart' but had emotional issues/depression/social problems and/or lack of coomon ground with other kids our GP referred her to a psych. One year on and after ruling out adhd, aspergers and a host of other things we were advised by her teacher and a G&T specialist who happened to meet her that she should be IQ tested. The test has determined that she is profoundly gifted for Verbal Comp. (99.9th percentile) but substantially less so in other areas. Apparently this could account for the frustration and anxiety she suffers and obviously doesn't help with her perfectionism and pervasive fear of failure. We just want to help her, both at home and also through schooling and aren't sure how. We, psych included, have serious concerns that she isn't getting what she needs and that this is causing psychological implications. Does this sound familiar? Is it just a case of muddling through?
I'm hoping that this is a place where we can 'fit', if that makes sense, even if only virtually!
Thanks, K x

Hi, welcome, happy new year!
This forum is a great place to begin to read up on real options, rather than muddling through. Sounds like you are getting a leg up on things already with the counseling and testing.
How old is your dd?
Has the school been able to offer any advanced work for her? What do they mean by 'substantially less'?, I mean that could still put her in gt range in other areas, 99.9 being so darn 'up there'.

Welcome. Everyone on this board has been so helpful to us as we figure out our DD. It sounds like you are taking the right steps and I think people here will be able to help a lot smile Again, Welcome

Thanks amazedmom smile. This place is a godsend!

Hi Chris, DD is 8 and her scores were as follows:

SI 19
CO 17
VC 16
VCI > 144

BD 11
PCn 16
MR 12
PRI 119

DS 15
LN 13
WMI 123

CD 11
SS 13
PSI 112

From my research they're hardly deficient just scattered. The school have offered some extension work, but according to the G&T assn. I just contacted not nearly enough and her dip in PRI is likely due to refusal to answer questions due to fear of failure. I have since found out she hid under the table, behind the sofa for much of the test! I guess I won't know her actual ability without a retest with a professional in the G&T field which she doesn't currently have the resiliency for.
Being labelled xceptionally gifted is just hard to swallow when her overall score was not as high (>98th percentile rather than 99.9th for verbal).
We've been advised to homeschool, at least part time.
All advice gratefully received!
Hope you're good smile
K
