Our family is thinking about seeing a therapist to help us all as we learn to be a family with a very gifted child. I am in the mental health field and have asked around for a therapist who works with gifted kids. The therapists I have spoken with don't seem to think that we need someone who specializes in gifted kids, just an all around good counselor. I would like to hear some thoughts about this. After all the reading that I have done about gifted kids, it seems like a lot of therapists don't know about all the AG social/emotional issues. The psychiatrists I spoke with stated that of course other psych. would know all about gifted kids. Do they?

I am a therapist. I would NOT pick just anybody. This is not an issue most people in this field have experience with. Where are you? I may be able to recommend someone. I can pm you if I have a name.

If you happen to be in or near central NJ I can recommend someone that specialises in working with gifted kids and their parents...

It makes all the difference in the world. My sons first therapist was play based and didn't have any knowledge with gifted. She was good to get him used to therapy though and he really liked her. Last year we found him someone new and he specializes in gifted and even trained & studied with James Webb. He has done wonders for my son. The gifted mind works so much differently and this doctor understands it and nourishes it. We simply googled gifted therapist child and our city. Good luck.

Sorry - where do you get private messages? Supposedly you can hover your mouse over the little envelope up top, but nothing happens when I do that.

Yikes! I will read her dissertation when I have lots of time. I will see if there is anything else out there by her. Thank you for the info.

We are in a similar situation - I've called all the local options and branched out to about a 100 mile radius and they all tell me they have someone that could work, but no one that has specific experience with gifted children. They act like I'm crazy when I ask them if any of their staff have experience in working with gifted children and I get the impression they believe any ole therapist will do. I don't want just any ole therapist, I want someone that understands the specifics of working with gifted children.

Good luck greenlotus!
