OP nowwhat? Junior Member N Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 30	the psychologist who tested your child has never heard of Dabrowski's overexcitablities theory? I was when I brought it up today.....all you have to do is read a book about "gifted". I was a bit dismayed.

Had he heard of Dabrowski at all? Theory of positive disintegration? If no to both, then I might want to check on that degree of his! LOL I recall covering these topics, including a brief mention of the overexcitabilties, in a general psych class. Maybe he once knew and has just forgotten.

If not, I wouldn't personally. My quick test is to go to Google Scholar and try searches like dabrowski positive disintegration etc. I didn't see any very highly cited papers in the list, or a very large number of papers at all, which suggests that the topic may not be mainstream. Maybe Mom2MrQ was just lucky to hear about it in a general psych class? It would be interesting to know when other people who've studied psychology first heard of it - I haven't. I've filed it in the noggin next to "Multiple Intelligences". In any event I don't think it would have much bearing on the testing. I also took general psych classes, and don't remember covering it. But I have a terrible memory for some things, and it's been a while. Striving to increase my rate of flow, and fight forum gloopiness.

If not, I wouldn't personally. Dabrowski wasn't mentioned in my college level psyh classes - I never hear of him until I stumbled into the gifted world. My hunch is that he's just starting to be translated into English, and that over the next 20 years 'Theory of Positive Disintegration' may become more popular. Or may not, since brain based explanations are so popular right now. If you had asked the psychologist - how does my son's testing relate to the work of Freud - I'll bet you'd get funny looks as well. CAMom Member C Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 748	Our psych, who is an ed.psych had never heard of Dabrowski. In fact, she'd never heard of DYS. I don't fault her for it- she still really understood my son and has tested him three times. She is a school district employee who specializes in identifying gifted children... meaning she doesn't do the IEP testing for kids on the other end of the spectrum.

For as big as it seems to be in the online gifted community, the vast majority of the educational community doesn't seem to know anything about it. Likewise, until I came here, I had no idea about the online gifted classes available to our children. It really is so important for us to find each other and educate ourselves (like we're doing here!). It's sad to think of how many other parents are floundering without these resources. Today I had the first psychologist appointment for my DS and I brought up OEs too. The psych didn't answer me she knew the theory or not but she seemed not considering gifted would contribute a child's behavior problems. DS8 has some traits are similar to ADHD/Aspergers. Those behaviors did cause some troubles when he was young but now they are pretty mild. It's not because the problems are disappeared, he just can manage his behavior much better. The psychologist did have many experience with 2e kids due to in our area there are so many gifted children. When she talked to me, my understanding is she believed the behavior problems are caused by some kind of brain function disorder/disability but not OEs. She hasn't talked to DS yet but I am a little bit worry DS being misdiagnostic.
