My ds9 was diagnosed with dysgraphia a couple of years ago. His writing was okay for first grade but was a problem in second. He didn't space between words, his letters were hard to make out, and he didn't use punctuation and capitals consistently. His spelling has always been pretty good if you could read it. On the OT report, his fine motor skills and visual motor speed were way behind.
He went to OT for 2 years. He learned to write in cursive with HWT, but he was never very fast. Last year, he had an assistive tech evaluation and was given an alphasmart. He started the school year mostly typing but printed other assignments. On the things he typed, capitalization and punctuation were much improved.
Lately, he's started writing in cursive (neatly!), and he's started drawing (mostly optical illusions and patterns). He's also taken up origami and magic, things that we've tried to encourage for years to help with his fine-motor issues.
Is it possible that his motor issues were just delayed and now he's catching up? He still has dysgraphia, but he functions at an above-average level. His teacher said they haven't done a long writing assignment in a while, but he's doing really well on the short ones.
