I found this today. I cried. I cheered. I got mad. I cheered again. I felt "hope". And while it's really only focusing on early entrance to K (which he is already in this year), I'm still ecstatic about DS's future - finally! And well, DD almost 4 could EASILY be in K next year instead of the year after (also affected by the birthday rule). I offered to help out wherever I could (or we could - DS5.5 is like the poster child here):

Early Entrance to Kindergarten - possible in my state/county?????

Now I sit, anxious... how do I get my work done now? LOL

I think the biggest hurdle with early entrance is that the school has to invest time and funds to test and observe before a decision can be made.
And with budgets getting tighter every penny gets pinched.
Around here the decision is left up to the school but most schools just see it as a hassle. They like to wait until mid-K before they decide to accelerate because it is easier for them.

Yeah, I'm sure that's a big issue - maybe they ought to look into having an "accelerated" K class, like they have a "special needs" K class instead. I don't really know the answer regarding testing for early entrance vs accelerated/gifted K classes, etc, but it seems that the real thing to address here is not early entrance per se, but the birthday rule itself (my state - sept 1).

I am moreso excited that they are finally tackling this issue, even if it's "too late" for DS.

DH came up with the best way for all of our children to easily be advanced without the hassle from schools -- instead of calling it Giftedness, call it "Hyper Learning Disorder." HLD for short!
I know that's not much real help for anybody, but it's good for a little laugh.
And who knows, if it caught on, would it work???
