Help! My DS5 wants to know how they lift the space shuttle from the landing position to take off position. I would not think that this would be hard to find but I am having a terrible time. Can someone please help me? I don't want to think that I can't at least find the answers for him at this age! Thanks

That was my first thought too, but I couldn't find it. I also looked on YouTube and did not have any luck. I found video of the shuttle being moved to the vehicle assembly building but it skipped the part where the shuttle is tipped upright. DS was very disappointed.

I'll ask my brother, he works for NASA, so he whould know. But I think that they drive the front onto a flatbed crane and then slowly increase the angle until it is upright.

oh there was a wonderful NOVA show on that! I wonder if we have it recorded. I'll check and if we do, i'll post the title. It showed everything, the crawler, the lifting etc.

Thank you so much. I kind of figured it was some type of crane but DS needed to know for certain. He wanted to get it right when he played rocket. He already includes breaking free of gravity. It is so cute.

If I recall correctly, this video shows it in time-lapse photography: http://www.amazon.com/Big-Space-Shuttle-VHS/dp/0964458144

In any case, this video and the entire series is worth checking out. It's available from our local library.

Thanks, I will have to check that out. Space is definitely one of his interests right now.

Yes, go to March 23 for the answer to your question, you can proceed forward in time to see what happens next. It looks like there's even a video at the top of the hoisting which happens in the VAB..

You could try here as well but I couldn't get the videos to open from work:

    (look under Orbiter processing).
