We're going to keep him in the school until the end of this year because of the second language (it's a bilingual school). The bulk of the instruction is in the second language, and so he gets something out of his day (mostly in language arts and other activities in the second language).

BUT I'm going to take your advice and not settle for NO. I'll ask, gently but FIRMLY, if they could move him to a higher level maths class in English or in the 2nd language. He'd have to go to 4th grade. I'll talk to the mother of the other student who works at this level. Maybe she'll go with me.

And then next year he can hopefully be a new student in 4th grade. And we'll worry about moving him to 5th or 6th grade maths after that. Argh. One step at a time.
