What's the difference between "Calculation" and "Applied Problems"? I know that the Calculation problems are written (paper and pencil) and that the Applied Problems problems are given orally, so there could be a big difference because of that, depending on the kid's actual knowledge of that math topics, auditory and visual abilities, and memory. But is there a difference in the content of the problems in the two sections? Thanks.

Yes. Calculations is supposed to be more concrete and procedural, while Applied Probkems is more of a reasoning task, and typically involves a little language, to interpret the word problems.
