The high GPA/SAT is necessary, but not sufficient.

I remember using acting, band, debate, choir, and track and field as my supplements, coupled with valedictorian/high SATs, which worked for the $$$/Ivy League.

My BIL's Duke TIP experience helped him with getting his Duke Scholarhip along with his valedictorian/high SATs. I'd have to check on his extracurriculars, but I think he used my diffusion approach. He got into Harvard, too.

My SIL recently used showing dogs nationwide as her primary supplement to valedictorian. That seemed to work for the $$$ for her. It was heavily focused in one activity as opposed to being diffuse. I don't think she went after any of the Ivies, so I can't comment on that one.
