I guess that this is what I was saying in noting that dd13 had only had two years where she had learned anything in LA: she has continued to learn on her own, but it has involved self-directed projects. She wrote "books" in her free time in elementary, read constantly, etc.

However, the stubborn part of me really wants to find a way for the school to provide the enrichment not for the child to enrich him/herself. That's where we've found schools to do a better job in math. They've been much more willing to provide subject acceleration, alternative curriculum for a whole group of kids, and so on. There is actual enriched instruction not just the onus placed on the child to learn on his/her own without formal instruction.

I guess that it depends on what the OP is hoping for, though, and what she can realistically hope for given the school she is dealing with.
