Yes, some internists recommend taking fish oil with the misguided notion that it will lower your triglycerides. I take one, 1200-mg pill a day, but in the same breath, I don't know if it does anything.
In mice, if you feed them the equivalent of 20 or more fish oil pills, you can see an improvement in the cholesterol numbers. However, you can't do that in people since at such high doses, it is toxic for the liver, and, as I mentioned, I would worry about the trace amounts of mercury that are present.
Taking one or two fish oil pills a day will not change your cholesterol.
